Installation
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
Copy all of the WindE files to a directory
of your hard disk that is along the environ-
path.
First Time Introduction ( use PgUp and PgDn to
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ view this file and F1
for more help )
If this is the first time for you to examine
WindE, there are a couple of items that
should be dealt with before getting started:
■ Backup the distribution diskette
■ Install the mouse driver that was
supplied with your mouse. If there is
more than one driver, it should be the
driver that is Microsoft compatible:
■ MSMOUSE.COM──Mouse Systems and Imsi
■ MOUSE.COM──Microsoft and Logitech
■ With the backup diskette in drive A and
while at the DOS prompt enter the
following commands:
A: ┘ make a: drive current
PATH A:\ ┘ tell DOS where WindE is
WINDE ┘ execute WindE
As a first time user, you will find that WindE
is unique amoung the current crop of programming
editors. This uniqueness is WindE's strength and
its weakness. The weakness comes from the fact that
there really is not anything similar from which a
new user can have gained any previous experience.
The strength in the WindE interface is that any
text in any file can be pointed to with the mouse,
selected and used in any of several commands that
can be poped-up with the mouse.
o a pathname can be selected to change directories
o a dos command can be selected and executed
o a filename can be selected and opened/created
for editing
o text can be selected to be searched for,
deleted, copied, moved and replaced
o a global search and replace can be setup by
deleting an example of the text to be replaced
and by copying an example of the replacement
text
o macro keys can be recorded as you do your
editing, but since they are stored in ASCII
files, they can also be edited with WindE
like any other text file
o filenames from the directory window can be
selected and copied like any other text window,
which can be useful for building batch files,
lists of includes, link files, etc.
o when dos commands are executed, their output
is redirected into a WindE window where that
text can in turn be selected and executed on
As an example of the last item, a common utility
WHEREIS can be executed from WindE, and the pathnames
that it generates can be selected to change directories,
can be selected for editing or can be selected and
executed as another dos command.
In most editors, a command such as find is executed
and the user is prompted to enter the text to be found.
In WindE if the text exists anywhere, it can be selected
and then the find command is executed (reverse polish).
Think how useful this can be if you have just executed a
file compare utility from WindE and you need to locate
the first block of text that has changed in the file.
In the first case WindE presents you with the file
differences in a window where the text can be selected.
The entire block of text (which can be pages) can be
selected out of the file compare window, the cursor
is placed in the file to be updated and a find is
executed. When the text is found, it can be deleted
and the cursor will remain in the correct location.
The replacement text can then be selected from the
file compare window and a copy command will place it
at the cursor position in the updated file.
The common theme in all of this is that text only has
to be typed once or can be generated from the output of
any number of dos utilities. All of WindE's commands
can be executed without the need to type if an example
of the text can be found.
If your CRT card supports extended text modes like the
Video Seven VGA card which supports several, WindE
will use whatever mode the CRT is in when WindE is
executed. In the case of Video Seven, they have an
Extended Screen Utility - ESU - that can be set to the
following modes:
I'll just execute this command from WindE:
esu /?
and the following output is generated here for all
to see:
VGA 1024i Enhancement Selection Utility

Usage:
ESU /? - Prints this help message

to help shorten the learning curve. The effort spent
in learning WindE's unique interface, will be repaid
for years to come in improved productivity.
Logitech Mouse Drivers
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
Some of the more recent Logitech mouse drivers
have a known bug that should be corrected soon
according to the Logitech technical support
group. This bug causes the mouse to not send
keystroke data until the mouse is moved. This
makes for some pretty bazarre behavior. I have
found that Logitech driver versions 3.4 and earlier
do not have this problem.
WindE has been tested with the following:
Mouse Systems mouse and track ball
Imsi mouse
Microsoft mouse (serial and bus)
Genius mouse
DFI mouse
Logitech (many drivers - serial and bus)
with no problems.
Documentation
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
To help keep the cost of WindE as low as
possible and because of the logistics in
keeping up with a program that is constantly
being improved, documentation is now online
via a hyper-text help file: Press F1 for help.
Shareware Versus Registered Copies
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
There are two versions of WindE currently
available:
■ Registered Copies
■ Shareware Copies
Although both of the software packages are
copyrighted, the Shareware version may be
distributed according to the "Floating
Shareware Window," for "Evaluation Purposes
Only."
The Registered Versions are serialized and
must be registered to the purchaser. These
versions may only be copied to protect the
investment of the purchaser.
